![]() ![]() I like the way the magic annoys and frustrates the characters as much as it would me if I were in their shoes. I like their smart comments about the behavior of adults, and Jerry's cockiness, even in the face of dire circumstances. ![]() I like the way the children interact with each other, and the way their personalities come across in dialogue. I am sure it is no surprise to anyone that my favorite elements of this book are of the real world, and not the fantastical. The four children work together, first to make Mabel visible again, and then to figure out the rules of the magic ring. Once she realizes no one can see her, the princess reveals her true identity: Mabel, the housekeeper's daughter. The princess tells them of an enchantment that was placed over the castle, but just as the three children begin to believe her story, she puts on a magic ring and turns completely invisible. On their first excursion, the three stumble across a castle, and in the castle's garden, a sleeping princess. During a holiday from school, three siblings, Gerald (Jerry), James (Jimmy), and Kathleen (Cathy) are staying with a French governess who, because of Jerry's knack for talking to adults, gives them a lot of freedom to go off exploring on their own. ![]() My newest fantasy read is The Enchanted Castle by E. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Stewart really steps things up for this series and gives When in Rome a beautiful, painted aesthetic that looks great no matter what is going on. Gregory Wright and Bjarne Hansen handled the colors on the previous Loeb/Sale DC collaborations and did a wonderful job. One of the biggest differences from the other Loeb/Sale team-ups was the addition of Dave Stewart on colors. Loeb introduces some interesting new characters, and they fit right into the world he carved out of Batman's past, as if they were always part of the Bat-Universe. As readers of the other stories can imagine, if I were to give away too much more, it would ruin half the fun of the twists in the story. Needless to say, she makes some enemies in the course of the story, and of course there are the requisite surprise guests that appear. Selina decides she needs a vacation and travels to Rome to meet up with some people she hopes will shed some light on revelations made about Carmine Falcone's past in The Long Halloween. When In Rome opens with Selina Kyle and Edward Nygma (her sidekick for this story) traveling from Gotham City to Italy. At the time the story takes place in the Batman continuity, Catwoman still qualifies as a villain, and Loeb crafts a story that plays off that while still making her the protagonist. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 3.The Ghosts of Greenwich by Paul Morris. In Muse, we see Lazlo and Sarai pushed to their limits in every sense. The question of what Minya will do with Sarai’s soul haunts these pages – creating a litany of moral dilemmas and suspenseful crisis. Strange ended with a heart-stopping and utterly cruel cliff-hanger, and much of Muse leaves the reader tethered to that self-same cliff. To me, Muse was pitch-perfect from beginning to end, marked by Laini Taylor’s inimitable lyrical prose and enviable imagination. If the first book in this duology was a languid and indescribably vivid dreamscape, then Muse of Nightmares was a triumphant awakening into a reality equally monstrous and fantastical. Within the first few pages, I was captivated by Lazlo’s dreams, Sarai’s musings, and the magic of Weep. This duology will go down as my all-time favourite, sharing the throne with The Orphan’s Tales Duology and Six of Crows.Īs long-time blog readers might remember, Strange the Dreamer was one of my favourite reads of 2017. "The book's balanced assessment of Washington is satisfying and thought-provoking. At once informative and engaging, and filled with some eye-opening revelations about Washington, the American Revolution, and the very nature of military command, General George Washington is a book that reintroduces readers to a figure many think they already know. Despite being an "imperfect commander"-and at times even a tactically suspect one-Washington nevertheless possessed the requisite combination of vision, integrity, talents, and good fortune to lead America to victory in its war for independence.
